AVSL Round 6 Glenhuntly - 29 Nov
It was our big powerplay round today worth double points. Our team lifted, not quite as much as previous years, but still a lift. We had 24 athletes competing, just 2 more than our average in other rounds, but most had a crack at 3 events, which makes a difference. Simone, Clyde, Greg, Shane, Arun, Ryan, Christine and myself made the 40 minute drive to both venues to maximise points, which also really helped.
We were missing our biggest point scorer last week, Craig Sanford, but we did have big Shane Carstairs back as well as James McEniry and Jack Ashcroft. Plus we welcomed new athletes Milly Cameron, Emma Hessell and Emily Fegan.
Unfortunately two other big Div 3 clubs also played their Powerplay this round, and Sandringham and Mornington were really out in force. Both scored well over 20,000 points, which is unfortunately a bit out of our league.
- Christine Bridle was our highest point scorer with 1,081, doing 6 events across both venues
and over 350 points in 100m, long jump and shot put.
- Ryan Bentley scored 1,074, also at both venues, with season pb's in the 200m, 800m and shot put.
- Linda Buttigieg scored 1,029 points with season pb's in the discus and javelin, and our highest individual event points in the pole vault with 397 for leaping 2.4m
- James McEniry, back from a hamstring niggle, looked in great shape with 1,027 points
Only a whisker separating those 3.
- Jack Ashcroft went very close to the 1,000 points with 964 including our fastest 100m and longest long jump
- Our biggest event was the 800m at Doncaster with a record 5 females, plus 3 males. Milly, Emma and Emily debuted for WAM and all ran 3 of our fastest womens 800m times this season. Amy was our quickest with an impressive 2:33. Ryan was our fastest male with a season pb of 2:09.6.
- No head to head rematch between Martin and Daniel this round with Martin at Glenhuntly and Daniel at Doncaster.
- Our next biggest event was the shot put with 8 putters (is that a thing?) out at Doncaster. Shane threw nearly twice as far as anyone else with a big 13.51. See some action shots in the gallery.
- 14 athletes did 3 events or more for maximum points. A special thank you to Christine, Ryan, Linda, Jack, Clyde, Arun, James M, Simone, Daniel, Neill, Harvs, Greg, Shane and myself. Also a big thank you to all of our athletes who competed so well today. And well done to all those who pulled off big season pb's.
Our final points were 16,186 - our best for this season. We finished in 5th place for the day, which is also our best result this season. (We were briefly listed as 4th above Bendigo, but unfortunately that has been adjusted). We now have a 9 point buffer from the relegation zone - bottom 2 teams. But Corio and Ringwood both still have their Powerplays and are within reach of us now. We'll need to stay on our game in Jan and Feb to stay above them. Every point will help.
We do have a lot of winter athletes that we haven't seen out yet. You would enjoy the track events, you're already registered, and increasing our numbers will make the difference between finishing the season nicely v relegation. Hoping we might be able to see you out in a round or 2 in the new year.
A big thank you to all of our helpers today covering double duties: David Nowland, Darren Lansberg, John Dolfini, myself, James McEniry, Martin Spiteri and Jack Ashcroft. We now have only 1 more duty left in the last round at Casey Field on 28 Feb. so if you haven't yet done a duty this season, I'd love to hear from you to help at that one for a couple of hours.
