REGISTRATION
We appreciate your interest in registering as a member of Athletics Waverley.
Types of memberships
There are 3 main categories of memberships with Athletics Waverley:
1. Competing Memberships
Designed for those wanting to compete as part of the Athletics Waverley team in summer track and field events (also known as “AVSL” or “Shield”) and/or winter cross-country events (also known as “XCR”), all of which are coordinated by Athletics Victoria. There are various sub-categories of Competing Memberships, including a “Base Membership”, “AVSL Package”, “XCR Package”, “Max Package” and a newly introduced Little Athletics Victoria/Athletics Victoria “Dual Membership”. For more information about these membership options, please visit Athletics Victoria’s website at athsvic.org.au/membership.
2. Non-Competing & Recreational Runner Memberships
Designed for those who are not a member of another Athletics Victoria club and just love to run without necessarily competing at Athletics Victoria events, but want to support Athletics Waverley and/or join one of the training groups that train at the Waverley athletics track. According to Athletics Victoria (see athsvic.org.au/membership), a Recreational Runner Membership gives you the added benefit of “personal accident insurance for events and training” (with such insurance being facilitated by Athletics Victoria and/or Australian Athletics) and “discounted access to the 2026 On XCR Series”.
3. Athletics Waverley Training Membership
Designed for those who may already be a member of another Athletics Victoria club or don’t want or need the benefit of any personal accident insurance facilitated by Athletics Victoria and/or Australian Athletics. Unlike Competing Memberships, Non-Competing Memberships and Recreational Runner Memberships, Athletics Waverley Training Memberships are administered solely through Athletics Waverley (with no involvement from Athletics Victoria). To be an Athletics Waverley Training Member, you need to be at least 18 years of age.
Each category of membership is typically for 12 months ending on 31 March each year.
Additional membership benefits
On top of all the membership benefits mentioned above and at athsvic.org.au/membership, all membership categories also enjoy the following:
1. Access to lanes 1 & 2 of the Waverley track and Athletics Waverley clubroom & toilets
If you are training at the Waverley athletics track, as a member you will be entitled to run on the inside 2 lanes (which are typically closed for use by the gates positioned around the track). You will also be entitled to access and use the main room inside the clubroom beside the Waverley track (great for warming up and stretching on those colder days!) and the toilets connected to that main room.
These access arrangements are subject to a member being at the track when you are training who has a key to open the track gates and clubroom. When you are part of a training group with 5 or more Athletics Waverley members (including yourself), your coach or one of those members may be loaned a key to open the track gates and clubroom.
These access arrangements will also be subject to a school or another club having booked the track and/or clubroom for their exclusive use through Monash Council, or maintenance activities being carried out at the track by Monash Council.
2. Ability to join Athletics Waverley training groups
As a member you will also be entitled to join in with any of the Athletics Waverley training groups that operate at the track. These training groups currently comprise the following:
· A training group coached by James Atkinson – focussing on middle and long distance track events.
· A training group coached by Neil Hutchins – focussing on all track events for younger athletes.
· Individual or small group coaching led by Shane Carstairs – focussing on all throws events for all ages.
3. Free Athletics Waverley cap
If you are one of the first 50 people who sign up as an Athletics Waverley member for the membership year ending on 31 March 2027, then you will be entitled to receive a free Athletics Waverley cap!
Summer season
We have an affiliation with the Malvern Harriers athletics club. During the summer season only, we join forces and compete as “Waverley Malvern” Athletics. We established this relationship in 2020 during Covid which bolstered our teams and created a competitive edge. The registration process still remains the same, but we run as combined club during the summer season.
Membership fees
Membership fees comprise an Athletics Victoria component and an Athletics Waverley component (other than in respect of an Athletics Waverley Training Membership, where there is no Athletics Victoria component).
As at 1 April 2026, the membership fees are as follows:
According to Athletics Victoria (see athsvic.org.au/membership):
Open and Junior athletes with Competing Memberships are full competing members with access to personal accident insurance, membership offers and discounts, and can earn points in all club competitions;
Recreational Runners hold a “reduced” membership with access to limited personal accident insurance and a 10% discount to non-member pricing for XCR events, and cannot score points in club competitions;
Little Athletics Victoria/Athletics Victoria Dual Members must be a member of Little Athletics Victoria before signing up to Athletics Victoria;
Athletes must be turning 12 years of age by 31 December 2027 to register as a Junior athlete member; and
Athletics Victoria offers a 15% discount per Competing Member (applied to the Athletics Victoria component of the fee) when 3 or more Open or Junior athletes reside at the same address and register at the same time.
Athletics Waverley Training Members are generally not able to compete at Athletics Victoria events (unless they sign up as a Competing Member).
Member obligation to help out
As the Club is run by members for members, it is expected that each Competing Member (either personally or by someone on their behalf) will help out at least once a year at either one of the Athletics Victoria events for which we are required to provide helpers, or at our major fundraiser in December (i.e. providing support for the Waverley Gift held at the Waverley track). If you have a preference, please let the club registrar know by email: registrar@athleticswaverley.com.au.
Competing Members will be notified by the club of the duty roster.
