AVSL Round 10 Casey - 28 Feb 2026

We had a good turnout for Round 10 with 18 athletes in 50 events. We scored 13,036 points which was a very good result in a round which didn't suit our distance runners. Importantly we finished 6th and smashed Yarra Ranges, who didn't really turn out for their Powerplay round to avoid relegation and finished 9th today. That means they finish 4 points behind us for the season and we avoid relegation again. We also beat Corio by 2 points today and finished the season just 1 point behind them and very similar on aggregate points. An incredible finish to our season.

I seriously didn't think this was possible after last week. But its amazing what a week can do. So Ringwood and Yarra Ranges will get relegated to Div 4 and Waverley-Malvern will stay in Div 3. A fantastic finish to our season with strong results in the last 2 rounds helping to keep us up. Well done to all who competed so well today, and for the season.

Interestingly in Div 1, Box Hill will get relegated from Div 1. They have been one of our dominant Melbourne clubs, and this is the first time they'll be out of Div 1 since Moses was a boy.

Some highlights for Round 9:
- Linda Buttigieg was our top point scorer today with 1,127 points. Linda scored 405 points in the hammer and 389 in the pole vault. It's the first time this season she's topped our round points, but she's been very close many times.
- Christine Bridle was only 2 points behind with 1,125 points. That's less than a whisker in any event. Christine threw a pb in the javelin and ran a PB 100m. A great finish to a fantastic season. Linda was our top point scorer. She has competed in every round, and topped 6 of them. She was the 3rd most valuable athlete across all cubs in our Region.
- James McEniry scored 996 points, with an amazing 435 points from his 400m, which was an equal season PB to the one hundredth of a second.
- Shane Carstairs scored 984 points throwing at both venues, his best points for the season
- Ryan Bentley scored 879 points with a big season PB 800m and our season fastest time of 2:04.5.

A big thank you to our helpers today: Julian and myself, making sure our points counted.

We had four runners who completed all 10 rounds. Special recognition to Christine Bridle, Ryan Bentley, Clyde Riddoch and Simone Albiston. Well done.

Our best point scoring events this year were the shot put 17,256, 1500m 14,771 and 800m 13,546.
Our best venue was Murrumbeena 30,752 points.

This is a fantastic finish to the season - staying in Div 3 after staring down the barrel of relegation. Well worth celebrating. Please keep free Saturday night the 21st March for a celebration dinner.
