AVSL Round 1 Knox - 11 Oct
Our 2025/26 Shield Season kicked off today at Knox and Williamstown. Well done by the 22 Waverley- Malvern athletes who competed. There were some great results:
- Welcome to our first time Waverley-Malvern athlete – Gerard Moore who competed in the 3000m at Williamstown
- Our best points were by Christine Bridle 1,137 points competing in 5 events with an impressive 386 points in the long jump.
- Next best was James McEniry 1,075 points from 6 events, with 388 points in the 400m. He accidentally misentered his 1500m time and was seeded in the fastest heat, reminiscent of Nick entering 1:45 for his 800m a couple of years ago. After the first 100m James sadly had to run the rest of the race on his own.
- Then Jack Ashcroft scored 1,063 points points from 4 events, with 368 from his siszzling 100m in 11.71.
- Ryan also scored over 1,000 points with 1,024 with a big 386 from his 400m.
- Our highest event points were 403 by Amy Hessell in an impressive 3000m at windy Williamstown in 11:02
- Our fastest runners (in events with 2 or more) were:
Male: 100m Jack Ashcroft 11.17, 400m Ryan Bentley 54.55, 1500m Ryan Bentleigh 4:39
Female: 100m Linda Buttigieg 16.39, 3000m Amy Hessell 11:02
- Our best field events:
Male: Discus Shane Carstairs 39.65, Javelin Jack Ashcroft 45.95, Long Jump Jack Ashcroft 5.91
Female: Discus: Linda Buttigieg 20.54, Javelin Linda Buttigieg 17.37, Long Jump Christine Bridle 3.20
Our biggest event was the 1500m with 12 Waverley-Malvern athletes running, including 5 of us in heat 4 where Daniel and Matt smoked us older runners, both running PB’s of 5:02 and 5:08. Looking forward to seeing them both smash 5 minutes soon. Also a huge pb by Nicholas in 5:34 who has taken a week off the marathons and is showing us he still has speed.
Well done also by Linda 975 points, Neill 850 points, I scored 844 points (but only made the 5k start at Williamstown by a whisker. They were on the start line as I walked through the gate), Clyde 823 points from 7 events at both venues with a cactus knee, Niamh 703 points (including 380 in the 1500), Arun (the new Dad) 605, PB Daniel 563, Ernie 443, Harvs 441, Marcus 440, Simone 412, Amy 403 from the 3K, PB Matt 369, Shane 345, Nick 324, Tilly 250, Alex 248 and Gerard 181. Amazing work everyone.
Overall we scored 14,194 points. That’s our 4th best score of the 10 rounds last season. We finished 8th in Div 3, but pretty close to Bendigo and Ringwood just above us, who we beat last season. So a pretty good start to the season.
A special thanks to our Club Helpers John Dolfini, Richard Ferrer, Janice Marston and myself. Thanks to them them we scored 5% bonus points. We’ve now covered 2 of our 5 duties for the season. We do need to fill a helper duty next Saturday at Casey Fields. Looking for a couple of people to share 2.5 hours each. Please let me know if you can help the team out. I can’t be there next week.
