XCR Round 7 Lakeside 10k - Sat 27 Jul
Despite forecasts of heavy rain and gale force winds, the morning turned out nicely with no wind or rain. Waverley had pretty good numbers for our men, but our women were down a bit.
First away were the men. Smoothy continued his awesome form this season and pulled away from arch rival Magnus Michelsson this time, to become state 55+ road 10K champion in the awesome time of 35:23, nearly a minute quicker than last year. Davin was our second runner for most of the way before House pulled out his customary negative split and pulled away in the last couple of km. House ran 36:49, with Davin 37:08, picking up the state bronze medal for 55+.
Julian was back in form with a nice 38:04, and Tim was not far behind him in 38:41 to round out our Div 4 team. Ernie was next in 41:18 followed by Daniel in 42:28 (getting back after his European vacation) and Smurf ran a blinder in 43:20. Then Michael 47:47, Nick 49:49 (a bit hungover after an 8 hour session with his mates enjoying the JJJ Hottest 100), Harvs 52:04 (shuffling in after straining his calf again) and Matt 53:37. Whilst there was just a second between Smurfs and Nick in the previous event, Smurf really had the upper hand today.
Then our women were off. Beck and Niamh were together after 1km, but only Beck could keep that pace up. She managed an almighty PB, breaking 40 minutes for the first time with 39:54. She’s had to fight off Aiden’s cold during the week, so was very proud at the end. Awesome run Beck! Niamh ran a solid 43:25 to pick up the state silver medal in F50+, and Janice did well to finish in 52:24 to help our womens teams results despite battling a hamstring niggle picked up during the week. It was also good to see on the sidelines Em (jetlagged and just back from Europe the night before) and Sally.
This was the first time we’d had our top M50+ team together for the season, but we were surprisingly pipped by Box Hill who had pulled out an even more elite line up. We now hold a narrow 5 point lead for the season, and it will all come down to the last 3 rounds. Our women 50+ finished 7th, 1 short of a full team.
