AVSL Round 3 Replacement Round - Frankston - 7 Feb 2026

After Round 3 was washed out earlier in the year, the Reserve round was utilised to cover it (Round 3b). Controversially only athletes who entered Round 3 and those events were allowed to enter the Reserve Round. As a result many athletes weren't allowed to enter, and not in the events they wanted. So overall there were not many athletes competing, and the point scores from most clubs were about half their normal level.

Waverley-Malvern had 12 athletes in 28 events, compared to 21 athletes in 47 events the previous week. It was a hot and windy day out at Frankston and our times were very ordinary in the distance events. It was hard to score points, so a big thank you to everyone who competed on Sunday.

Overall we did pretty well finishing 5th in Div 3, our second best placing for the season. But the bad news was that Corio did even better finishing 4th. They're the team we need to beat to avoid relegation and they now move 4 points clear of us with 2 rounds to go. We'll need something pretty special to catch them now.

Some of our highlights:
- kudos to Ryan who competed down at Geelong, where it must have been hot and windy. He must have entered there in the original Round 3 for a bit of fun, and with the Reserve Round rules, had to compete there on Sunday. He somehow managed season pb's in the 100m and 1500m. He was our second highest point scorer with 928 points. An outstanding performance in tough conditions.
- Christine Bridle was our highest point scorer again with 1,114 points, one of her best season results in tough conditions. She has stretched her lead in our best season points ladder. She also produced a season PB' in the hammer.
- James McEniry scored 769 points from 2 events (1500m and high jump - season PB) plus a 4x400m relay
- Shane Carstairs scored 653 points with a season PB in the hammer
- Martin Spiteri 624 points from a very hot and windy 800m plus a 3K plus a 4x400m relay
- Greg Carstairs 550 points with a season PB in the hammer
- Simone Albiston 548 points, and somehow managed to break the hammer. I though those things were indestructible.
- Well done by Ernie 472 points, including 800 and 3k in the wnd plus 4x400m relay. Andrew Duncan 379 points with a season PB in the 2k walk in tough conditions, Clyde 298 points also with a season PB in the 2k walk in the heat and wind.
- Special mention to Gerard Moore. Gerard was entered in the 5k, but with the warm conditions, the field was well down on normal numbers and were all set to start. Then Gerard appeared on the horizon running towards the track. He had to keep running all the way through the gate and across the field to the start line. Fortunately they waited for him. He must have sprinted most of a km for his warm up. Needless to say it was a tough 5k for him in those warm windy conditions, but he did hang in to finish respectably an gave us a valuable 168 points. Thanks Gerard.
- For those who listen to the Inside Running podcast, there was a fantastic interview this week by Jaryd Clifford of Australia's rising star para athlete Annabelle Colman. Annabelle recently won a bronze in the World champs over 1500m in her T20 Division. Annabelle has an intellectual disability, but has an anazingly bubbly personality and it's a really uplifting interview. Annabelle ran the 5k at Frankston on Sunday ahead of Gerard. In fact she almost lapped the field including her dad who was 2nd. One to watch out for.
