NewsFlash from Phuket
Congratulations to Stephen Paine who has just won the Phuket marathon in 2:37:50 in very hot and humid conditions. We knew he was in great shape and now we are privileged to have an international marathon champion in the club. Well done also to Harvs who finished 3rd in his age group.

Results of the Waverley 5K Handicap at Albert Park Lake on Sunday 15 June
Well done to the 20 odd athletes and their entourages who ventured out to Albert Park Lake today for the 2nd running of the Waverley 5K handicap. Plenty of banter beforehand with few liking their marks. Eventually we were away under the watchful starters eyes of Yvonne, Alan, Chris and Tony Brock. Shamila and Clyde's partner Paula set off first and Pauls quickly put a gap on Shamila. They were followed by last year's winner Tim Hassett and exchange student Yoshimi and the rest of the field progressively joined the chase. Uma Muthia set a strong early pace passing Holsty after the first km. A strong group of back markers turned up the heat with Naveen taking a dive half way around.

As the field turned the final bend to the finish line it was Paula streeting the field by more than a minute. Shamila was 2nd running very close to her handicapped 27:30 and Uma was third half a minute behind. Special mention should be made of Martin Spiteri who passed most of the field to finish 4th only 2 seconds behind Uma. Further back in the field I put in a big sprint over the last 100 to take on Ganesha but he had too much speed and left me in his wake. The trophy was awarded to Shamila as Paula was a late addition and her handicap was unverified. Full results are attached below. Special thanks to Yvonne and Alan for processing these so quickly.

Round 4 - Sunday 1 June - La Trobe Uni
Our next event is in a fortnight's time. 15K (for open runners) and 5K for underage around the La Trobe Uni Ring Road bright and early on a Sunday morning. The 5K starts at 9:30am and the 15K at 10:00am. If you haven't entered either do this directly using the forms on the AV website or email me and I'll enter you in bulk. Allow plenty of time before the start (and no accidents on the way there this year Evan). I got in trouble last year for saying the course was undulating. I'll stick my neck out again and say it has a short hill, but its pretty tame. I will be an apology for this one as we have a family weekend down to the Prom. So I want you all to do Waverley proud and go past me in the club trophy points, which are attached.

Also best of luck to Harvs who has just embarked on stage 1 of his world marathon tour kicking off at Phuket, where he will come up against another formidable Waverley runner in "the House". The way he's going he could do anything at the moment. Good luck to them both.

Open File to read James Atkinsons report for Round 3 - Sandown Classic, 17 May 08

A reminder that our next event (Saturday 17 May) is the 10K road run (for open runners) at Sandown in 2 weeks time. This is the premier 10k road race in the country and the best opportunity around to run your best 10K road time in a very strong field over a fast course. So we should have a big turnout. Its a 3K course for Men U14-U16 and Women U14-U20. The 3K is at 1:45pm and the 10K is at 2:30pm.

Madeleine Pape!!!!!!!!!

Congratulations on an awesome run in the Sydney Grand Prix last night. 1:59.92 - an Olympic A qualifier and only the 6th Australian woman to break 2 minutes. An absolutely fantastic run. Well done. We at Athletics Waverley are all extremely proud of you.

In other news it looks like Waverley were successful in winning the Womens U18 and Mens Open Division 3 Shield Premierships, whilst narrowly missing out in Mens Div 4. So congratulations to all who've played a part in another very successful season for Athletics Waverley. 7 venue premierships and 2 shield premierships is a great result.

Athletics Waverley's Michael Harvey has won the Toowoomba Marathon on Sunday. Harvs has pulled out a huge second half to move from 4th to 1st in an overall winning time of 2:58:13 on the 4 lap course. This is a fantastic result by Harvs and well justifies the trip to Qld. Well done!

Firstly a great big thankyou to everyone who participated or assisted over the winter season. Athletics Waverley had a fantastic season smashing heaps of records for numbers and finishing with a promotion to Division 1 in the open mens competition. Thankyou for making it such a great season.

We finished with a great presentation night on Grand Final Eve where we were privileged to have Commonwealth Games 1500m medallist Mark Fountain tell us about his progression to the world stage. There were plenty of award winners concluding with Uma Muthia taking out the coveted Brownlow medal. Thanks to the many people who contributed on the night, even John who's much feared speech was a ripper. Open File for award winners.
